The early history of Cesenatico begins at the year of 1302, when the harbor of Cesena was established,although the first records of the settlement go all the way to the Bronze Age. At the beginning of 1500 Cesare Borgis decided to strengthen the former port and so he called in Leonardo da Vinci to create architectural design of the port which was introduced in September 1502. Since than Cesenatico has become important fishing and trading center.There are still many of the old fishing ships anchored here.In the second half of the 16 Th. century the Venice republic of serrenissima ruled the port, that became well known to Spanish as well as Flemish merchants. At the time when Pope governed the city, the harbor didn’t develop properly, so it's citizens asked for the autonomy,which was confirmed in 1817. Perhaps the most important year for the town was 1849,when Garibaldi dropped in for a while to resupply his more than 200 men army including Ugo Bassi. Garibaldi was accompanied by his beloved Anita, who was just dying and needed some rest. This event is celebrated on the first Sunday of August. Since Italy has been unified, fishing is the main source of income in Cesenatico. In 1863 there lived 50725 people, 786 of whose were fisherman. The fished out fishes were preserved in the cone shaped ice – boxes , called conserve which are deep wells filled-up with ice. Several of these wells are still preserved even today. At the end of 19th century first spa facilities are established. As many as 25 000 tourists came to Cesenatico to spend holiday in 1925. During the next 10 years 30 hotels and pensions were built providing 600 rooms. At that time lot of Czechs and Slovaks as well as Hungarians were among the visitors. Recently there are 127 spas and more than 400 hotels in Cesenatico.The shore is 7 km long and includes the beaches of Zadina ,Ponente ,Levante, Valverde and Villamarina.. Slowly sloping sandy sea floor with no dips and mild warm climate makes this area ideal for recreation of guests with disabilities from May through September. Points of interest. Leonardo da Vinci's port channel build in 1514 has in its oldest section Marine Museum featuring variety of ships distinctive for northern and central part of Adriatic sea.Vessels are restored to its original historical look. Vicarage and church of San Giacomo e San Cristoforo established in 1350 features two famous paintings from Francesco Andreini of Cagnacci workshop.The church is located next to the port channel. Antiquarium is museum located in City library featuring historical discoveries from ancient Rome . La piazzeta delle Conserve -"The Conservation Square" is located near by the port channel where are three wells for fresh fish storage which were still in use as late as in first half of 20th century.
